Around Holland in not even a day

Lilliputian travelers, be aware: I've found the answer to your prayers. See all of the Netherlands in just a couple of hours while visiting the country's smallest city -- Madurodam! The miniature city showcases all the Holland highlights -- canals, gabled houses, famous landmarks (including headquarters for two Van Luyken clients, Schipol Airport and ANWB). All of these tiny, typical Dutch scenes are built to scale -- 1:25, to be exact.

Barbara Wiggers and I visited this minature gem of a land Tuesday afternoon. Despite being confused by the strange numbering of Madurodam's streets and the often misdirecting orange arrows and slowed by groups of children, their grandparents and come interesting Asian tourists, I thoroughly enjoyed my stroll through the small cities of Holland.

For some background:

Madurodam has been around since 1952 and was erected as a tribute to George Maduro, who died a hero in WWII. Madurodam is very cute - definitely a must-see when near den Haag (the Hague).

General info:

History of Madurodam:

If I'm suddenly deported, then I can at least take comfort in knowing that I've seen it all...

These guys, fixing up a church or something, will give you perspective as to how tiny the structures are in Madurodam!

A very interesting building - I hope I get to see it first hand, though I can't remember what it is.

The Anne Frank house.

Wow, your trip looks much more tame than mine was in early 2006. I missed the herring and hagelsag! You look like you're having a GREAT time Carrie! I love the pictures and can't wait to see what is in store!

Good place to be if you're a shrimp.
